Primary Math Tuition in Ang Mo Kio

Building strong foundations for the PSLE. Small-group P5 and P6 Math tuition focused on understanding concepts, model drawing and confident problem solving.

Upper primary Math changes quickly. In P5 and P6, questions become longer, topics start to combine, and a child who did well with straightforward sums can suddenly lose marks on problem sums. Usually the cause is not ability. It is one or two foundations from earlier years, often fractions or ratio, that were never fully secure.

Our Primary Math tuition in Ang Mo Kio starts by finding those learning gaps. We help each child understand why a method works, show it clearly in a model, and then apply it with confidence under PSLE conditions.

Common struggles

Is Your Child Facing These Primary Math Challenges?

  • Gets stuck on long problem sums
  • Unsure when to draw a model
  • Confuses fractions of the remainder and of the total
  • Struggles with ratio and percentage changes
  • Makes careless slips in working
  • Runs out of time in Paper 2

Extra assessment books rarely fix these on their own. We read each child's working to see exactly where the thinking breaks down, then target practice at that gap. Our article on common P6 Math mistakes explains several of these patterns in more detail.

Our approach

How We Teach Primary Math

  • Conceptual understanding first. Children learn why a method works, so they can adapt it to unfamiliar questions instead of memorising steps.
  • Model drawing. Bar models make the relationships in a problem visible, especially for before-and-after, remainder and comparison questions.
  • Problem-solving heuristics. Students practise choosing a strategy, such as working backwards, guess and check, listing systematically or the unitary method, and explaining why it fits.
  • Reading the question properly. Many marks are lost before any calculation starts. Read more in why more practice is not enough.
  • Step-by-step correction. Mistakes are worked through in class so they are not repeated in the next paper.

Key topics

Fractions, Percentages and Ratio: The Heart of P5 and P6 Math

A large share of PSLE problem sums are fraction, percentage or ratio questions in disguise. We give these topics extra time because they connect to almost everything else in upper primary Math.

  • Fractions: fractions of a set, fractions of the remainder, and comparing quantities with models.
  • Percentages: percentage of a quantity, increase and decrease, discount and GST.
  • Ratio: equivalent ratios, changing ratios and before-and-after problems.
  • Linked topics: rate, speed, average, area, volume and geometry questions that rely on the same reasoning.

PSLE Exam Techniques

Knowing the topic is only part of doing well in the PSLE. In P6 we build the habits that protect marks on the day:

  • Showing clear, complete working to secure method marks
  • Checking whether each answer makes sense, with the right unit
  • Pacing Paper 1 and Paper 2, and moving on from a stuck question
  • Timed practice with exam-style questions, reviewed question by question

P5 & P6 Math tuition

What We Focus On at Each Level

P5 Math Tuition

P5 is where fractions, ratio and percentage become central. We secure these foundations, introduce model drawing for multi-step problems, and build steady working habits before the pace of P6.

P6 Math Tuition

P6 brings the topics together for the PSLE. We revise weak areas, practise challenging problem sums with heuristics, and move into timed exam practice as the PSLE approaches.

Class size

Small Groups, Personalised Guidance

Maximum 8 students per Primary Math class. In a small group the tutor can look at every child's working, notice where they hesitate and guide them directly. Children are encouraged to ask questions and explain their thinking, which helps learning gaps show up early instead of during the exam. Read more about why small-group tuition works.

Experience

Taught by Mr Ken Lim, Since 2015

AZKEN has taught Primary and Secondary students in Ang Mo Kio since 2015. Primary Math classes are taught personally by Mr Ken Lim, who has guided many cohorts of P5 and P6 students through the PSLE. Parents hear from him directly about what their child is finding difficult and how it is being addressed. Read more about Mr Lim and AZKEN.

FAQ

Primary Math Tuition: Parent Questions

When should my child start PSLE Math tuition?

Primary 5 is a good time to start. Fractions, ratio and percentage become central in P5, and gaps there carry straight into P6 and the PSLE. Students who join in P6 can still improve, but an earlier start gives more time to fix weak topics calmly.

What happens in a P5 or P6 Math lesson?

Lessons combine concept explanation, model drawing, guided problem sums and exam-style practice. Working is checked during class, so mistakes are corrected while the student still remembers how they thought about the question.

How large are AZKEN's Primary Math classes?

Maximum 8 students per Primary Math class, so the tutor can look at each child's working and spot learning gaps early.

Where are the Primary Math classes held?

All Primary Math classes are held in person at our centre at 163 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4, #01-430, Mayflower Shopping & Food Centre.

Can my child try a lesson first?

Yes. WhatsApp us with your child's level and recent Math results, and we will recommend a suitable P5 or P6 class for a trial.
